Michelangelo Buonarrotti (1475-1564) was a sculptor and painter, and designed architectural facades.
Michelangelo is best known for his creation of the paintings that adorn the ceiling and altar walls of the Sistine Chapel - the ceiling being a scene from Genesis and the Altar walls mural representing The Last Judgment. He also sculpted several famous statues including "David" and "The Pietà" (the latter currently located in Vatican City).
Michelangelo did not use cartoons for this work. This was very unusual.

Michelangelo was his first name: Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni He is one of a few famous artists, for whom we only use their first name, Raphael, Rembrandt are other examples.
