He was never sure about what he desired to do. At first he became an assistant to an art dealer and then later he put his all into becoming a pastor. However because he was so self sacrificing he was found to be uncongenial to the ones in higher order. After this his brother Theo suggested he study to become an artist reminding him of his enjoyment in younger years of sketching the landscapes around their home. Theo financed him in this direction.
