There are many quotes by Michelangelo where he insists he is a sculptor and not a painter. Marble was definitely his preferred medium. An interesting aspect about the paintings in The Sistine Chapel is the sculptural quality of the images. This does not really show in photographs, but when seen in person one has the feeling that the figures are bursting out of the ceiling and wall.
This is hard to answer because all of his work is wonderful. He felt he was a sculptor and all he did was free the figure with in the stone. I have seen David, the Sistine, the Pieta, and other works he did and each is wonderful in it's own way. The figures in the Sistine seem to move and since the cleaning the colors are so bright. I sit in awe each time I have been able to see his work and wonder how a human can create items that have such beauty , movement, and grace.
Michelangelo actually loved doing both equally but he liked doing sculpture more, because he learnt it at a very young age.
Although he was a superb painter, Michelangelo didn't like to paint. He only liked to sculpt.
