It depends on your location. In most cases- black. Little black dress for a woman, a black jacket for a man. Or you can get creative and wear that velvet purple jacket, or grandma's old hat. When in doubt, go the conservative-dressy route. When you want to stand out or have fun, anything goes.

Casual dress is just as appropriate as elegant wear when visiting an art gallery. Comfortable walking shoes are important, you will be walking and standing a majority of the time. For an opening or evening event the dress is usually black tie.
