By etching a concrete surface you are providing the adhesion needed for the paint to stick. For paint to stick the surface must be rough - it cannot be smooth or slippery in anyway or the paint will simply peel off.

Like doors and frames they need to be sanded back before they can be painted. The reasoning being that otherwise the gloss finish will not allow the paint to stick. By sanding it to create a rough finish so the paint has something to stick to.

When I say rough however - Don't misunderstand me as to think it should be really rough. The surface should still seem rather smooth however as long as its not glossy.

In the same way concrete needs to be etched or roughened so that paint can adhere to the surface. You can do this in two ways.

One is to use Hydrochloric Acid - Simply dilute it 1:10 or stronger if required and then tip it onto the concrete. Broom in and when fizzling has stopped rinse off. Make sure you rinse it off properly or it also will repel the paint.

Your other option which is becoming the more popular now (as people don't seem to follow instructions with the first and always and have problems) is to use a dinosander. Sand the surface down and rinse off - This is problem proof and easy to do. You can hire one from your local hire shop.

As I say both will work but the latter is becoming more popular as you can't go wrong.

To prep the surface use quikrete etching stain. Quikrete offers a semi-transparent stain that gives it a two-tone look. It comes in a variety of colors. I know Lowe's offers it for around $25-$30 a gallon. Also they have a product that is etch and stain in one. Only certain Lowe's carries it. You may be able to special order it in.

It remove the silicates the give concrete its smooth finish and creates a profile for mechanical adhesion.

Can you use white distilled vinegar to etch concrete?

Concrete is very hard. To do any good in etching it you need something very strong. Muriatic Acid is the only thing that I have found that works. How strong you mix it depends on the concrete. Some concrete that was poured with a lot of water in the mix will need less Acid. Concrete that is smooth and hard will take more. Muriatic Acid is caustic. Read the direction. Use rubber gloves; safety glasses; and a respirator. For a large project, such as a driveway or Patio. Use a plastic garbage can. Fill with 10 gallons of water. Carefully pour one gallon of Muriatic Acid into the water and mix with a wooden paddle. Take a plastic watering can and fill it with the solution. Wet your concrete with a water hose, then carefully pour the Acid solution onto the concrete. It will bubble and foam. This is the acid etching the concrete. Let it set for about 15 min. Scrub with a stiff push broom, and then rinse with a water hose. The acid will kill plants and grass. Steve Schillinger sds@knology.net = Safety Note = Make sure you put the water in the garbage can first--adding water to acid is a sure way to get splashed with concentrated acid.

What is hydrochloride acid?

Hydrochloric acid is hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in water. It is a strong, highly corrosive, poisonous acid that has millions of uses in thousands of fields, from etching metal to cleaning concrete to digesting food in your stomach to lowering the pH of swimming pool water.
