Back in the late 1980s, I knew a guy at Mississippi State University who said he got the idea of replacing the hyphen with a star when he worked for Walmart in (I think) the town of Eupora. He was always talking about taking Walmart to court to claim royalties, but as far as I know that never amounted to anything. Anyway, according to him, the star is there merely because it looks better than a plain old hyphen.
