Well not many people know this but yes there were people fighting against each other etc. etc.

But the main reason apartheid was scraped from the books is because a few years back there was a vote where 51% of the white population voted against apartheid and that black people should have a vote while the other 49% voted for aparthed (I can be wrong but it really is this close). It was decided that black people should have the right to vote by 51% of white people because they originally didn't have a vote. This caused Mandela to come out of prison eventually.

Thus, it wasn't Mandela or anyone from ANC who made apartheid stop but actually the white people who where sick and tired of fighting for something that would inevitably be lost.
