While a guest of Admiral Stepan Makarov, aboard his flagship, the battleship "Petropavlovsk" in April 1904, the Russian warship struck a mine while entering the Yellow Sea. More than half of the battleship's crew perished during her sinking, including both Admiral Makarov and the noted war artist Vereshchagin.
