Sparta didn't have a patron god, a god protector of the city (like Athens had Athena).
They worship all 12 gods but they felt closer to Zeus as they considered themselves descendants of Hercules, son of Zeus.
Other gods they worshiped were Apollo, Artemis (known as Artemis Orthia, possibly because her cult joined with the pre-Dorian goddess Orthis) Athena Chalkioikos "of the bronze house" (the temple was decorated in bronze sheets), and Poseidon.
Statues were used to symbolize gods & those to be worshipped. People used statues to spread image of God to normal people, who have not yet been in direct contact with god.
The Spartans may have disproportionately worshiped Ares over the other Greek gods because he was the god of war, and Spartan lifestyle revolved heavily around warfare and military preparation.
Apollo Carneos,Arthemis Orthia, Athina Khalkioikos had known temples and shrines.
Osiris was a god of the dead, so people worshipped him to have a good afterlife.

A:To me, worship is how people of different religions believe they communicate with their God or gods. While I may believe there really is no God or gods for them to communicate with, I know they have the absolute right to worship as they choose. When present in a place holy to members of any religion, I treat that place with respect.
