There is a gantry with an xray tube inside of it on tracks that spins around in a circle and opposite of that there is a detector to catch the xrays on the other side. As it spins and collects data it is sent to a computer workstation that transforms the "raw data" into a 2d image on a screen.

Computed Tomography Imaging known as a CT scan (or CAT scan) is a particular type of x-ray that uses multiple x-ray beams at different angles to build up a cross section of the body's organs and tissues.

CT scans can show several types of tissue with great clarity such as bone, soft tissue and blood vessels and allows easy differentiation

A CAT scan is a non invasive procedure used for diagnostic purposes.

It combines specialized X-ray equipment and computers in order to produce multiple pictures of inside the body. These cross section images can then be produced on the computer to be studied by specially trained radiologists. They not only produce images of bone as in an X-ray but they can image all internal organs, soft tissue and blood vessels. This makes it easier to detect cancers, tumors, cardiovascular disease, musculo-skeletal disorders etc.
