John Lennon had an extremely difficult childhood and adolescence. His father left him, when he was small and his mother, unable to take care of him, sent him to live with his aunt. This left him in a state of emotional confusion. Little did he know, he was living in the same town as his mother and didn't know it until years later as a teenager. As he was finally rekindling a relationship with his mother, she was run over and killed by a drunken, off-duty police officer. Over the next couple years he used alcohol very heavily. While attended art school, john met a talented artist named Stuart Sutcliffe who became his closest friend and the first bass player for The Beatles. Unfortunatley, within a few years, Stuart died of a brain aneurysm. Lennon generally repressed and hid him emotional pain and never really faced it until many years later, after the Beatles breakup.

The fact that john maintained a positive and loving message through all of the pain and heartbreak is truly inspiring.
