As different from today, artists did not paint first and then wait for someone to buy it. They waited for commissions and painted what had been ordered. Leonardo had commissions from rich people in Florence, e.g. the Medici family and the husband of Mona Lisa.
he was way ahead of his time, most people consider him to be the smartest man who ever lived. he had no idea how his inventions would influence the modern day. there are so many things we wouldn't have today if it weren't for Da Vinci
