He saw a group of black street kids doing this move, (which was called the Backslide). He liked it and asked them if they would show him how to do it. MJ continued to practice while still living with his parents.
He perfected and refined the moves making it his own - and often adding the tip-toe stand to round it off during performance ...and calling it the Moonwalk.
However, the first person I saw doing the backslide was a man called, Jeffrey Daniels, who was from an 80's pop group called, 'Shalamar'; I remember the time he performed this style of dance on 'Top Of The Pops', to the song - 'Night to Remember', because that was one of my favourite songs back in 82 :>) However, the roots of the backslide style of dance actually originated many years ago.
Okay, just went off to see if I could get the link for you to paste in, (YouTube is great for oldies, haa!...here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ImkBve8OW8
So, about a year later, Michael had already refind and tweaked it, basically making it his own - then giving it more exposure...The rest, as we know, is history :>)
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Michael Jackson had never claimed he invented the Moonwalk, and has stated this numerous times - how, who and where he first saw it.
He also includes this section in his own 1988 biog - 'Moonwalk' - Always giving credit to the street kids, etc.
As for the robotic stuff you'll see Jeffrey Daniels do on above link - well, Michael was doing that way back in his teens :>) Here's a link to that, in case you have not yet seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj71HPMSOsY ... He was aways a cool mover/groover
Take care :>)
