McCarthyism was a campaign against so called communists in the US government and other institutions carried out under Senator Joseph McCarthy in the period 1950-54.
Many of the accused were blacklisted or lost their jobs, although most did not in fact belong to the Communist Party. It was similar to what we now call witch hunts.
McCarthy was carried away as well because of all the attention he got through TV and radio. His claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere.
He was unable to substantiate his claims and that led him to be censured by the United States Senate.
He also used various charges of communism, communist sympathies, disloyalty, or homosexuality to attack a number of politicians and other individuals.
He died at the age of 48 of hepatitis perhaps caused by excessive drinking.
