A museum is looked after by a curator whose duties include caring for the institution's collections and sometimes acquisitions. The specific tasks of a curator will change depending on the mission of each particular institution that they are in charge of.
An art gallery and museum will have a curator or a director. This person will oversee what pieces come into the collection, what pieces are on display, and what pieces leave the collection. Depending on the size of the museum, there may be an owner who oversees everything, and there may be other directors who focus on certain parts of the museum or gallery.
A director could be a curator or an executive director or both, it depends on how large/small the gallery is or if it is a non-profit gallery. A curator plans a schedule of which artists and which works will be displayed in an art gallery. An executive director is in charge of the finances, the board of directors as well as most fundraising and they often delagate tasks to other employees of the art gallery.
The person with overall on-site authority and responsibility is called the curator. However, there are often boards of trusteees who oversee the collection as well.
