A CT scan that is repeated a certain number of times in the same examination period is said to be multiphasic (bi-phasic, tri-phasic, quadra-phasic). The interest is in observing a change in a parameter as a function of time. The main reason is to show the effect of intravenous contrast on CT attenuation, say pre contrast, and at one, three and five minutes post injection. By observing increased CT attenuation ( aka enhancement), or lack thereof, and it's temporal and morphological characteristics, radiologists infer the probable diagnosis.

The same can be said of pre and post contrast studies using other contrast agents or routes of administration (e.g. pre and post contrast fistulography).
