An item box is a floating box with a ? inside it. They are very common in the Grand Prix, VS and Battle modes. When you drive through one, you get a randomly selected item depending on your position relative to the other players. Each character can only hold one item, and must use it or drop it before he or she can get another item.
In Mario Kart Double Dash, the character on the back of the kart will take single item boxes. Dual item boxes will give both characters an item.
Watch out for fake item boxes, which appear red and have a backward ? mark (stationary with no ? mark in Mario Kart 64).
