Batik is a process that makes designs on fabric. Was prevents certain areas from taking the dye so that you can create a variety of designs. The method is to cover areas that you want to resist the dye with wax, and then dye the fabric. This can be repeated as often as you like.
Batik is a decorative art form used on fabric.
How it's done
- A design is painted on untreated fabric using melted wax as a "resist" and the fabric is then dyed.
- If multiple colours are required, more wax is added and the fabric is re-dyed. This can be done many times for a multi-coloured fabric, starting with the lightest colours and dyeing darker colours over them.
- Finally the fabric is heated, to remove the wax and laundered, sometimes more than once before the fabric is made into clothing and/or decorative items.
Wax and Dye are used. The tool in which you apply the wax onto the cloth with is a Tjanting Tool or a Paint brush. After Apply the wax you put the cloth in dye. Then continue that until you have the patturn you want and Iron it making sure you have either a paper towel or some form of protection to stop the wax melting on the iron.
Wax is dripped on the fabric and then it is dyed. This can be repeated several times with different colors and patterns of wax. Then the wax is removed, leaving the cloth with a colored pattern.
Batik painting is a way to make decorations in dyed fabric.
In Batik painting, hot wax or paraffine is carefully drawn on the fabric. The wax should be fluid when hot, and stiff when cooled down, much like candlewax. When you dye the fabric (in water with cold-water dye), the colors won't go in the fabric areas that are waxed in.
I think it's an Indonesian technique.
Applying the wax is done with a "yanting", a sort of pen made of copper, in which there's a reservoir for the hot wax, and from there a little pipe with which you can draw very fine lines of hot wax on the fabric.
One can wax and dye in several layers, in colors that match. One starts dying with the lightest color, then let the fabric dry, apply a new coat of wax, do the second dye etc.
The stiff wax can be removed by ironing the fabric, the fabric placed between sheets of tissue. Sometimes this is done in between as well, depending on the design.
Batik is a method of producing designs on fabric by using a wax resist. The fabric is painted with wax designs, then placed in a dye bath. Only the unpainted areas are dyed.
Batik was first used in Asia, India and Africa.

Batik was originally made in Java, Indonesia. Batik is now made all over the world
so many... batik is differentiated by the location where it came from, some places in Indonesia that produce batik such as : Cirebon, Solo, Garut, Madura. All of those places are located in Java. So, for the batik produced in solo we called it batik Solo, etc. Each place has their own batik pattern as their signature, so just by looking at the pattern we can tell where the batik came from. Hope the info can help :)
