Both types of clay are the same. You can use both types of clay to create things. I looked into this and found out that both dry up after a while if you want it to. If you want to paint the clay after it is dry is sort of a mystery to me. I absolutely know that after the crayola air dry clay drys you can definitely paint it. Leather Hard
To add colour to clay, it is best to allow the clay to dry completely, crush it to a powder, mix the dry colour powder and then rehydrate. Wear a mask, clay dust is harmful. You can also add wet colours to clay slip, the hardest thing is adding colours to clay when it is plastic.Mostly however the clay is not coloured, instead you colour the pot using slips or glazes.
Place the clay in a bucket. Fill with water, making sure the clay is completely covered. Let the clay sit for a couple of days. Wait until the clay becomes a pile of mush in the bottom of the bucket. Spread the clay on a canvas sheet, allow the excess water to run off and spread the clay out on the canvas. Allow the clay to air dry for a day or two.
