DEEP-SEA THERMOMETERS- Thermometers used to measure temperatures in ocean depths must be especially constructed to withstand extreme pressure. For example, the pressure at depths of 5 miles is about 12,000 pounds per square inch. Ordinary thermometers could be crushed by such pressure.
