Encaustic painting is the technique of melting beeswax, mixing in pigment, then painting with it before (and as) it cools. The result is ghosty, frosty, and semi-transparent, often having a confectionery (candy-like) quality to it.
Brushes, sticks, spoons, etc ... are often used to apply encaustic paint, as is dripping onto a surface laid flat. Hard, non-bendable surfaces like masonite are best for this type of painting )not stretched canvas), so that the hardened paint does not buckle and crack with any movement.
