This was a theory about a demographic map that would soon be very favorable for Democrats. Since studies have repeatedly shown that the Republican party is overwhelmingly white, Democrats would soon be able to make substantial gains, thanks to an emerging coalition of non-white voters (especially African-American, Asian, and Hispanic voters), as well as a growing number of socially liberal and college-educated professionals. These groups were, according to the theory, increasing in numbers and would gravitate towards the Democratic party.

Unfortunately for Democrats, while a few states with growing Hispanic populations (like Texas) are at some point going to turn from red to purple to blue, thus far, it has not happened in all states. And although the coalition held together in the 2012 presidential elections, it seems to have done little to stop Republicans from taking over Congress by 2014, since Democratic voters of all ethnic groups and walks of life have tended to be less motivated during mid-term elections.
