What is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration was the movement of approximately seven million African Americans out of the Southern United States to the North, Midwest and West from 1916 to 1930.

When the African Americans were freed from slavery they found life in the southern states of America hell. Certain laws had come into place and people like the KKK wre around. So the great my greation was the many African Americans moving form the souther states to the northern states of America to what they believed was to be a better life.

This is wrong.

The Great Migration was the mass movement of black Americans from the south to industrial cities of the North. Beginning during World War I and continuing until the 1970's, Black Americans fled the South looking for more tolerant societies and economic opportunity. At the time it was the single largest internal migration of any group in American History.

The great migration was during World War 1 when all the white males from the north went to fight overseas. Seeing that the industrial jobs in the north were open, a large amount of African Americans from the south migrated to the north to grab those jobs before the soldiers came back. Women also took up some of those jobs. Even though this helped Manu African Americans gain more rights, when the soldiers came back from the was, riots and racism broke out because they wanted their jobs back.
