In legends and folklore, certain animals or humans are believed to change their shape at will and become another animal. An example is the raccoon-like tanuki in Japanese folklore. In the legendary stories of werewolves, men were said to change into wolves under certain conditions. Vampires are another example of shapeshifters; for example, they were said to change into bats. In shamanic cultures, some sorcerers claim to shapeshift, as told in accounts of the brujos and brujas in Carlos Castaneda's books about the shaman don Juan.
