Let's see if I can explain how I used to make friendship bracelets out of string (embroidery thread): 1. Cut six long strands (about 24") of embroidery thread. 2. Tie them all together in one knot about two inches from the end. 3. Tape the knotted end to the table to hold it while you work. 4. Lay the strings out flat. 5. Tie the second string once around the first string, then the third string once around the second string, then the fourth around the third and so on. Continue doing this until you've created a woven bracelet to fit you. 6. Once you're done "weaving", tie a knot to secure it. Cut off the remaining thread and tie it around your wrist. Sounds confusing, but once you get started, it's easy.

In some regions in RVN US tankers used to install "zippers" in their jungle boots, thus any spare bootlaces became excess...and for those men that wanted to make bracelets...the laces became available. They just braided them together, like any rope or piece of string. Note: Grunts didn't usually utilize "zippers" in their jungle boots because the zipper got muddy & wouldn't function.
I tune my 5th (lower) string to B. Others make the uppermost string the 5th and tune it to A. Others do neither, and have their own tunings. The 5th string is just another string used for playing.
