it depends on the use. for taking notes, mechanical pencils are the best, for no sharpening is required. for less demanding work, wood pencils are more efficient because they are cheaper, but require constant sharpening. I will be impressed when they make a number 3 pencil. the higher the number, the thicker the lead is. thicker lead is less concentrated, and therefore it has a lighter mark on paper. this is mainly why artists use thicker lead for sketching.

In my case a 2HB pencil gives a better shade effect to drawings but does not flake as much as dark pencils like 2B or 3B. In the case of technical drawing where you may be using two different shades the lighter the better just make sure one is darker to make a clear differentiation between construction lines and real lines

A lot of personal preference here; I find a soft pencil such as a 2B great for lines which need to be erased later leaving no trace. Such as datum lines and guide lines. However a hard pencil such as a 2H is excellent for tech drawing. Being hard it can be sharpened to a good point and with a bit of fine emery cloth and care, it can be fashioned in to an almost needle point, great for those accurate lines. Shading needs lots of practice, experiment with the full range of pencils.

I'm not certain as to exactly what you mean by type, but I will answer this as best as I can.

Mechanical pencils don't need sharpening, and you can change out the leads for different grades of graphite (9H to 9B) and different colors. You can find these type of pencils for different sizes of leads which range from 3mm to 9.3mm.

If you are looking for regular wood pencils with lead in them, I recommend Staedler or Derwent. Both brands make a solid outer shell to protect the lead from shattering inside when the pencil is dropped. Prismacolor has still not perfected their shells, but are good pencils if you don't drop them.

The #2 pencil is popular for a reason, it is the easiest to write with. The number of a pencil refers to the hardness of the "lead," or graphite. The harder the graphite, the higher the number. Higher and lower numbered pencils are used primarily for drawing and have specific purposes in drawing.
