Everything has carbon in it. When the organism dies, it begins to disintegrate. We know the rate at which things disintegrate at, so we can determine how much carbon is left and then apply a scientific formula and figure out how old the organism is. Radioactive dating works much the same.

Carbon dating is radiometric dating, using the carbon 14 isotope. Carbon 14 is used for fossils of fairly recent origin, as it becomes less and less accurate beyond 10 half lives (about 50 thousand years). One half-life of carbon 14 is about 5370 years.

Longer lived isotopes such as uranium/uranium, uranium/thorium, and potassium/argon are used to date inorganic materials of volcanic origin, such as rock or layers of volcanic ash, and can yield results ranging from millions to billions of years, accurate to within about a hundred thousand years.

Carbon dating is one type of radiometric dating, there are others. Carbon dating uses the carbon-14 isotope, with a half life of about 5700 years. Carbon dating has the peculiar property that it works primarily on dead things. Other forms of radioactive dating are more broadly applicable.

Relative age dating is a scientific process of evaluation used to determine the relative order of past events, but does not determine the absolute age of an object or date of an event.

Both relative dating and absolute dating are complimentary tools tools used to assign temporal characteristics to a sequence of events. Both are attempting to get information on the history of events.

Tools like radiometric dating use radioactive isotopes and known decay rates and this allows some samples to be assigned a certain age to within some accuracy. Assigning a certain age or date is a form of absolute dating.

The primary difference is that absolute dating assigns an actual time or age to an event or object. Relative dating simply says one is older than the other but no age is specified.
