Impressionism is an art movement begun in France that sought to capture a moment in time and give the viewer an impression of what the artist had seen by capturing it in loose fast moving application of paint onto canvas. It was a reaction against the very realistic style that had come before it. The Post-impressionist artists, also French, were influenced by the Impressionists but they focused on color as their main expression and often used very bright and bold applications of color as opposed to the more pastel palettes of the Impressionists. The Post-impressionists also concentrated on technique in the application of their paint using thicker and even more obvious strokes than the Impressionists
