A Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder is commonly used for this purpose. It consists of a glass sphere about 140mm diameter, and which, by focusing the Sun's rays, burns a track in a curved slip of paper. This burn mark is read manually.

Nowadays replaced by electronic equipments that do the same task automatically, and with repeatable results.
