The so-called terms of left and right wing political theory has been altered by new influences in world politics. Currently and generally speaking, left wing politics involves heavy social engineering by a strong central government. It seeks to have the state as the all powerful and all knowing style of government.

The traditional term of right wing political theory called for a small central government with strong limits on the central government. It also entails favoring big business.

Fascism and dictatorships are creatures all on their own definitions. Many times a fascist government, for example can use techniques that are traditionally left wing politics.

Answer: PEOPLE vs. BUSINESS

Explanation
The traditional difference between left and right wing was the emphasis about whom political policy should best benefit. Those on the left wing argue that government should most benefit the middle and lower classes of the population directly. Those on the right wing argue that government should most benefit companies and corporations. Both argue that their policies will indirectly benefit the other group, but the primary thrust of left's policies are towards the lower and middle classes and the primary thrust of the right's policies are towards businesses.

People on the left argue that when the people in the lower and middle classes are protected and monetarily benefited, they can afford to spend more on businesses' products, improving businesses in the country. People on the right argue that when businesses are given protection and monetary benefits, that they expand and hire more laborers, thus pulling more lower and middle class people out of poverty and into self-sufficiency. However, in each case, the benefit to the secondary group arises indirectly from the policy, not directly from it.

Commentary on Totalitarianism
Many on the right-wing like to argue that the difference between left-wing and right-wing politics comes down to the concentration of government authority. They argue that the more right-wing a government is, the more free it is, and the more left-wing a government is, the more totalitarian it is. This is incorrect. You can have left-wing governments that have weak governmental structures, such as those governments created by anarcho-communists in Ukraine in 1919 and Catalonia in 1936 (for only a few years each) and you can have right-wing governments with repressive internal structures like Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The scale from anarchy to totalitarianism operates independently of the division between left and right.
