Basically, it controlled the extent of the monarch's power, and put legal limits on it. Before the Magna Carta, the king had a huge amount of power over everything, and he had control over everyone. Decisions that affected the country were based on his will alone - he could do whatever he wanted.
The Magna Carta ensured that he could not be an absolute monarch (not have total power). Much of his power was handed over to the Barons who largely controlled their areas of land and the people living on it. The Magna Carta also meant that the king could no longer sentence anyone to death by his will alone - no-one (except serfs) could be punished except by the laws of the land.
