Paranoia in that the narrator felt that the old man was a danger to him when the old man did nothing to give that impression. Also, the narrator thought the police who came to the house after the body of the old man was cut up and hidden, knew he had done it when actually they had no idea and were just making a routine investigation about noises someone in the area complained about.
