This is an issue of much debate. Here are the main mistakes:

  1. The Spanish Ulcer - Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808 but never truly conquered it. Not only did the Spanish overwhelm the French with Guerrilla tactics but Wellington was able to open a front and gain crucial knowledge about Napoleonic tactics.
  2. Russia - in 1812 Napoleon invaded Russia with 600,000 men. This army was far to large and difficult to control. The invasion was a failure and within a few months he was back in France with only 50,000 of the original force left having achieved nothing.
  3. Ego - Napoleon put too much control in his own hands and couldn't handle everything at the same time, this lead to careless mistakes and reduced military ingenuity.
  4. Enemies - Napoleon took on two many enemies at the same time. When the sixth coalition was formed he was fighting off invasion from all of europes major powers.
