Answer

The normal breathing rate is 16-20 breaths every minute for the average adult (male and female)

Don't Know Who Wrote This But Respiration Rates Vary Among Age Groups.

Newborns: Average 44 breaths per minute

Infants: 40-60 breaths per minute

Preschool children: 20-30 breaths per minute

Older children: 16-25 breaths per minute

Adults: 12-20 breaths per minute

Adults during strenuous exercise 35-45 breaths

Watch The Person Breathe For One Full Minute, and Count The Number Of Breaths They Take. One Full Breath In/ One Full Breath Out Is Considered One Full Respiration. Some Will Say Count For 30 seconds and multiply by 2, but I'd rather count for the full minute. Or if you can't do it that way, place your hand on the person's chest while you count. With their permission that is.

average adult at rest 15-20 breaths per minute

over 25 or under 12 indicates a possible medical abnormality

newborns breathe 40 avg

maximum whilst at work/play/sport is 50

no known study indicates a difference in humans due to gender

Breathing rate will vary according to ones emotional state, when relaxed & calm it may be nearer 8 breaths per minute.

Today the majority of us are breathing too much either normal breath volumes and higher rate or larger breath volumes and normal rates.Technically most of us are suffering chronic hidden hyperventilation, a physiological response to modern stressful living perhaps. 12 to 20 breaths per minute.
