It was Christian religious themes.
There are numerous artists who have painted this subject. The most famous is the one in Milan by Leonardo. It is from the High Italian Renaissance, 16th century. Impressionism began in the late 19th century.
They used the nude as a subject matter, depicting its beauty and strength.
it shifted from purly religious art to more inlightened art such as greek and roman myths and more personal paintings
The most famous version is a large wall mural by Leonardo da Vinci, done between 1495 and 1498, copied as an oil painting by Giampietrino around 1520. Other versions include a painting by Giotto di Bondone in 1306, a fresco by Andrea del Castagano in 1445-1450, and a version by Dieric Bouts painted in tempera and oil on wood in 1464-1468. Tintoretto painted a huge (12 feet by 18 feet) version in 1594. Veronese painted an oil on canvas entitled 'Christ in the House of Levi' in 1573, a scene of the last supper. There are some Byzantine pieces which could also fall under the subject of the last supper, mosaics made before the 1400's.
Realistic I guess you would say. It is a half portrait of Lisa de Giocondo painted by Leonardo da Vinci. While the background was painted in a way that would give the image depth and may not have existed, the subject did; and as it is a portrait of her, I would say it is meant to be realistic in it presentation of her image. However, in the arts realistic or realism means something slightly different than a true image of the subject. Rather, it means the subject of the image is as it would be in everyday life. So the Mona Lisa being a planned portrait would not be realism or realistic.
