The painting is perhaps the most famous in the world, the 'Mona Lisa'.
I am quite sure that the painting's subject is Leonardo's mother Caterina in a distant memory. She died in 1495. Lisa del Giocondo's job was to be the model only.At the time that Leonardo painted the portrait of his mother, whom he adored, she had already died. This is the reason why Leonardo chose the setting of the Holy Land, as he imagined it, as the background to the portrait. (The Jordan River is painted to her right and the Sea of the Galilee to her left). See: Cross and Yarn-Winder.The idea is that she was alive in Leonardo's imagination. This is similar to the background of Leonardo's paintings of the Virgin Mary, which also depict the same landscape of the Holy Land. Thus, Leonardo glorifies the Mona Lisa as the Virgin Mary. See: Leonardo glorifies Salai as Saint John the Baptist.Leonardo pictured his mother, who raised him until age five, in painting the Virgin Mary. So, she was the only significant woman in Leonardo's life, hence deserved to be glorified as the Virgin Mary.In all of his paintings, the Virgin Mary looks at her son. In this painting she looks at the painter. The conclusion is that the painter is her son. This would explain why Leonardo kept the portrait with him wherever he traveled, until his death.Leonardo was a great scientist as well as a great artist. His work shows integrity and belief in his self expressions. Leonardo possessed excellent memory and very lively imagination. He remembered his mother as a happy laughing and smiling woman (See: The Benois Madonna). Cesare Borgia briefly employed Leonardo da Vinci as military architect and engineer between 1502 and 1503 in Rome. Cesare and Leonardo became intimate instantaneously - Cesare provided Leonardo with an unlimited pass to inspect and direct all planned and undergoing construction in his domain. Before meeting Cesare, Leonardo had worked at the Milanese court of Ludovico Sforza for many years, until Charles VIII of France drove Sforza out of Italy. After Cesare, Leonardo was unsuccessful in finding another patron in Italy
He was a brilliant human being. Definitely in the "genius club".He painted The Last Supper and Virgin of The Rocks, invented flying machines, weapons, wrote poetry, the list goes on and on.Leonardo da Vinci was a sensational man. You know the Mona lisa, he painted that. He virtually invented the helicopter and it would of worked but because he was so ahead of his time he couldn't build it.He was a genius.
Leonardo Da Vinci began painting the Mona Lisa in 1503. While it is thought that the portrait was completed in 1506, it is possible that is was not fully realized until 1517.
There are two versions: one of them at the Louvre. The other at the National Gallery in London. The Louvre painting was created in 1490 and the other one was completed around 1506. It was painted in Milan.
It is impossible to assess the value of a work of art until it is up for sale.
It will be on show at The National Portrait Gallery, London from May 2012 until October 2012. The portrait is normally kept at Buckingham palace.

Leonardo DaVinci painted and owned The Monalisa until his death, at which time it was sold to many different people.
No response because it was not exhibited. Leonardo carried the painting with him until he died, at which point the King of France became the owner.
A number of scholars have concluded that Leonardo da Vinci began work on the portrait of Mona Lisa in Florence, Italy, in 1503 and worked on it until 1505 or 1506, finishing when he was in Rome or Milan.AnswerThe Mona Lisa is a famous 16th-century portrait by Leonardo da Vinci. The Mona Lisa's mysterious smile has beguiled generations of viewers, but the true identity of the woman pictured in the portrait remains unknown, despite intensive research by art historians. Many believe the Mona Lisa to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Francesco del Giocondo. (Thus the Mona Lisa is known in Italy as La Gioconda.) Others suggest the subject was a mistress of da Vinci, or even a self-portrait, with da Vinci imagining himself as a woman. It is known that Leonardo began the portrait in Florence in 1503, continued work on it through 1506, and then kept the painting until his death in 1519. Over the next three centuries the Mona Lisa passed through many hands, even hanging for a time in the bedroom of Napoleon, but since 1804 its home has been the Louvre Museum in Paris. Leonardo's painting is famous among artists for its innovative techniques, including sfumato (shown in the painting's distinctive hazy, soft-focus effect) and chiaroscuro (use of light and shadow).Leonardo DaVinci's House
