1. What wax is used in woodworking?
Most any types of natural wax are used. Plain beeswax, carnuba wax, etc. Waxes without abrasives or added chemicals work best.
2. Why is wax used in woodworking?
Wax is used for two main purposes.
First, as a protective coating for all types of metal tooling. Cast iron table tops, plane soles, lathe bed ways...all tools benefit from a light wax polish. It works to help the wood slide more smoothly and to protect expensive tools from rust, water rings, and other environmental damage.
Second, as a protectant/polish for finished wooden projects. Wax makes a great protective coating, and when buffed, will outshine some lacquers. Applied in successive coats, you can build up a polish that will look incredible, and is simple and easy to replenish. Another coat of wax, followed by a rubbing or buffing, will give any project a renewed finish.

To achieve a durable and beautiful finish on your woodworking project using tung oil and wax, follow these steps: Apply multiple coats of tung oil to penetrate and protect the wood. Allow the tung oil to dry completely between coats. Once the tung oil has dried, apply a thin layer of wax to enhance the finish and provide additional protection. Buff the wax with a clean cloth to achieve a smooth and shiny surface. Repeat the wax application and buffing process as needed for desired results.
