Difficult to say without more information. Try and identify exactly where it is comming from. Check all bolts and nuts are tight. Are all bushes, mountings and gaskets OK?. that is where I would start.
They sometimes rattle due to the mercury inside.

Valve train clatter.
You need to check all the exhaust pipe hangers, one of them is letting the exhaust rattle against something. Also check muffler heat shield it could also be loose. When transmission in engaged in any gear the engine is torqued to the right, so that is moving the exhaust ( it is attached to the engine so it moves with the engine )into a position to rattle, in neutral the engine is sitting evenly in its mounts so no rattle. May want to check engine and trans mounts too.

You are probably hearing the beginning of detonation. This can be damaging to your engine so I would have the timing checked and corrected to avoid any engine damage. I do agree with your answer, but the op was pretty vague as to how loud the lifters get. It is common for cheap gas to cause the "popcorn" sound as well.
