Many will argue that it is not a new but old commandment. But a closer read and understanding of Jesus' role as a human will reveal it as a new command:

The OT command was to love your neighbor as you love yourself - your neighbor being your fellow man. But Jesus commanded:

John 13:34New International Version (NIV)

34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Jesus gave His entire life in service - even until His merciless death on the tree. If one wishes to become a disciple of Christ, not only will they follow Him but will 'imitate' (meaning of disciple) His every action and command. He is God and will come to judge all mankind.

Why is the last supper important to modern day Christians?

The Last Supper or Communion is supposed to be observed as a Memorial to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself instructed his disciples to do this "in remembrance of Me". You can find this quote in the book of Luke , Chapter 22, verse 19. I must note that observing the Lords Supper is serious business and should be done in a totally respectful manner only to honor Christ Jesus. The Last Supper is important to Christians for what it commemorates - the suffering and death of their Lord and Saviour. Jesus began this practice 'on the night when He was betrayed,' in the shadow of the cross. In the same way Christians are to live in the shadow of their own personal cross and death to self just like their Master and Lord.

What did jesus say at his meal?

I think that was when he broke the bread and said this is to resemble my body and gave all the disciples some. Then gave them all some wine which he said was to resemble his blood. That's why at church when you have communion they give you bread and say "the body of our Jesus Christ given to you" and then gives you wine and says "the blood that Jesus Christ shed for you"
