The decline of the once powerful Liberal Party of Canada can be traced back straight to the political civil war initiated by Paul Martin Junior against a popular leader, Jean Chretien. Martin organized a "party within a party" and undermined Chretien's leadership. Eventually, Chretien had no alternative but to fire Martin as Minister of Finance because of the criticisms Martin had leveled directly at Chretien. The rift resulted in three camps within the Liberal Party: the Martin camp, the Chretien camp, and a third camp who basically said, "A pox on both your houses." A party divided cannot stand. A party split three ways disintegrates.
