These styles represented some of her most favorable (and controversial) paintings such as Black Iris IV, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and Summer Days. Her techniques were such as charcoal abstractions at first, but gradually extended her paintings to the medium of watercolor; by the fall of 1916, she had returned to a full supply of color. During this period she became increasingly talented with watercolor.
