Henri Rousseau used oil paint for his paintings.
Some say that Spencer's style was independent of any particular movement, but others say his Pre-Raphaelite influence is evident. His subject matter was often religious, but he also painted several other themes, from portraiture to WWI paintings.
This is a matter of personal opinion.
yes
many techniques were used in his painting "Self Portrait in the Studio". Brett Whiteley, like most artists, often painted with oil paint on canvs. But he often mixed different techniques like for instance oil, paper, graphite and tempera on plywood. The types of mediums used in Brett Whiteley's paintings was mainly oil and the colour blue as he really liked the standing out of the colour. Also, Brett whiteley used texture like his hair. He has used many different colours but mostly the colour blue.
What influenced this subject matter? (why did L S Lowry choose to draw and paint what he did?)
Mostly oil on canvas. Experimented with chalk and charcoal. Also often used a mixed media technique where he would add extra material for more texture. e.g. Small amounts of human hair to a self-portrait.
the subject matter of realist painters is what they work or paint about.
Enlarged comic strips.

Mostly persons and places from his own life.
Coming back to Australia after his trip to paint other things all over the world, he was fascinated by the Australian outback especially the Sydney harbour and so he did several drawings related to it and 'Opera House 1982' just happens to be one of them Learn how to spell SYDNEY.
