If you go buy the book Spectrum 15 there's a really good painting of a drug addict smoking crack on the sidewalk and in the background, his demons (the drug addiction) are lurking over him without certain limbs and it symbolizes how he's breaking the addiction and tearing down that barrier. My fiance just got one similar to it and it turned out great! Good luck on yours.
How about a broken chain, an open window with sunlight streaming in, a monster behind bars, or a life preserver?
Tattoos are permanent, so one must be sure of their design. To symbolize loving a son, one could get a tattoo of a heart, the mother symbols of different cultures, or a tattoo of something that makes a mother think of him.
If it is a 4 leaf tatoo then I would say that it stands for good luck.
In my experience it means "warrior" - Although, there are not many active "warriors" who would get this kind of tattoo and, therefore, give themselves away to the enemy. By the way "warrior" = Navy Seal (as you might recall the Seal insignia).
Historically, in the days of large sailing vessels, sailors would get a sparrow tattoo for every 50,000 nautical miles they traveled. They have never been known to symbolize hope but today they can symbolize anything.
If you are meaning the flower violet, I know that it is the flower for aquarians. If you mean the color, I can't help. A solid purple tattoo would be an homage to Sailor Jerry Collins, the great tattoo artist who made the first safe purple tattoo ink.

The same thing it would symbolize on any other person. http://www.whats-your-sign.com/butterfly-animal-symbolism.html
The lock and key tattoo can symbolize either a couple, in which it would mean love. Or it can be for sisters, for the bond of sisterhood, and friendship.
I would assume that any tattoo of the number 1917 would be a reference to the October Revolution of 1917 in Russia-the first, and only revolution to bring the working to power.
A tattoo that a person can get to symbolize hardship is one of a bloody hand breaking free from chains. This would show how a person overcome all their struggles and achieved freedom.
Japanese tattoos of Koi can symbolize children. In Japan the have a special celebration called Children's Day in which they raise koi flags. Another tattoo would be of the Japanese kanji for children.
In many instances, a tattoo of a number such as this has gang affiliation. Not to say that this is the definitive meaning for this particular tattoo, but I would wager so. A lot of times one gets a tattoo on the back of their head as a bold statement of their affiliation so that it can be read by anyone at anytime in prison.
the swallow tattoo is a traditional naval tattoo. many sailors would get swallows/sparrows on their chest. one swallow would represent 5000 nautical miles traveled and a second would be 5000 more. they also were known to symbolize the end of a journey. mainly because sparrows were the first sign of land and would let the sailors know they are almost home.

I think a nice mother/daughter tattoo would be for the mother to get " Daughter" in Chinese symbols tattooed on her, and for the daughter to get " Mother" tattooed on her to symbolize each other :) I think something like a chainsaw masacer tatooo with blood and gour!!
