The guidelines for caring for a post foaling mare and her foal are generally the same no matter the breed. Each breeder approaches this slightly differently.
Primary tasks are:
Muzzle foal and prevent nursing if there are concerns about equine isoerthyrolysis.
Insure the mare and foal are healthy. Call the veterinarian if there are any issues that
cannot be addressed based on personal experience/knowledge. Premature, dysmature, meconium stained foals, twins are all protential emergencies...
Dip the umbilical stump in betadine solution or diluted nolvasan solution.
Administer any ecoli or colostridial endotox doses if desired.
Insure the foal gets adequate colostrum
Imprint foal if desired
Insure the mare passes the placenta and that the placenta is intact.
Remove soiled bedding if the mare foals in a stall and replace with dry bedding
materials.
Insure that foal passes meconium. (Enema or manual dis impaction may be required)
Provide feed and water to the mare.
Call the veterinarian and arrange for him/her to come out at around 12 hours post foaling to check foal and mare, pull blood for IgG to insure it is greater than 800. (Additional colostrum, transfusion or oral serum may be required if IgG is low).
Since each breeder is different there may be fewer or more tasks on their "to do" list.
Full research and a knowledgeable mentor are always helpful.
