Modern paints should not have asbestos in them.

In the 1960s and 1970s, some textured paints had asbestos in them. These were paints applied to bathroom ceilings and similar places where some noise absorption was wanted but a clean washable surface was also wanted. Textured pains were also applied simply to give a surface an interesting 3-dimensional structure, or texture, instead of a conventional flat painted surface.

Asbestos is not used in paints today, but was used in some specialty paints in the past. These were paints that were intended to dry with a texture, rather than flat, and were often used to paint the ceilings in bathrooms because the texture contributed some sound deadening.
