That is hard to answer and it can only be a guess and inferred from what has been written about her. She seems to have depended on Washington a great deal. Upon his death she refused to attend his funeral and watched from a second floor window and then she locked herself in the room. She seems to have been well respected and a good hostess. Her dinners are raved about in letters. She was less vocal about her positions unlike Abigail Adams who tells John her thinking on many topics.
Martha Washington's prime value was loyalty. She was loyal to her husband George, she was loyal to the newly independent United States. She was someone who believed that the wife of a president must set an example for the nation: before the Revolutionary War was won, when George was still a general, she was a vocal supporter of the troops and encouraged all the women to follow her lead in helping the military-- women were asked to sew or weave or use whatever other domestic skills they had.
She was also known as a very cordial and welcoming person (yes, like many of her era, she had house slaves, but historians note she was generally kind to them; she was also kind to people of lower social classes). When she became the wife of the first US President, she had already become extremely popular: in fact, while the term "First Lady" would not come into common use till much later, people loved Martha Washington so much that they spoke of her as if she were a member of royalty-- she was regularly called "Lady Washington."
She was kind, smart, and trustworthy.
Martha Parke Custis or her maiden name was Martha Dandridge.
The Washingtons did not have a happy marriage, so Martha encouraged George to run again. She felt it would help him have purpose in life and get him out of the house. When he decided to not run again, she tried to persuade him to run anyhow, and asked his good friend Thomas Paine to try to talk him into it.
Martha Dandridge Custis (June 2, 1731 - May 22, 1802) was George Washington's wife. She was a widow. Her first husband was Daniel Parke Curtis (1711-1757). They had four children together. She inherited much of Custis's Virginia property. She married George Washington on January 6, 1759.The Washingtons had no children of their own but cared for her two surviving children: "Patsy" (died 1773) and John (died 1781) and for Martha's two grandchildren from John.
