This is a very vague question because Frieda Kahlo painted numerous paintings. She has painted themes that vary from personal all the way to political. Kahlo painted many self portraits which express an "intimate" side of the artist. In other paintings she would address political topics or gender roles. For example in her marriage portrait, "Frieda and Diego Rivera", she clearly expresses gender roles. Frieda both accepts and rejects the roles which she had to follow in the 1930's society. One way she accepts gender roles is by portraying herself in a "submissive" manner to her husband, showing herself as a devoted wife to him. One way she rejects gender roles is the placement of the dove in the painting, which announces that she is a professional and independent woman artist.
Frida Kahlo, early 20th century Mexican folk artists main reason to paint was to paint images that represent and help the Communist Party of Mexico, in particular Stalin, saying at the end of her life 'it was the only reason to live.'
Many of her paintings are conveying the pain she feels. She had several sad occurrences in her lifetime, including a miscarriage and a failed marriage. She was heartbroken when her husband, Deigo Rivera cheated on her. A lot of her self portraits she drew in shame, because she felt that she was ugly. In fact, she even titled a self portrait "Very Ugly"...
