It all starts at birth, if the baby (you) seemed too small and weak you would be left to die (I heard they threw the kid off a cliff though).
At a very young age, around five or six, the government would take you away from your family to train to be a soldier. ("There is no greater pride than serving in the military")
While you and the other boys were in what we would call a modern day boot camp, (except there was a greater risk you would die) you would be put in fights to the death with your friends, you would be shown NO mercy by the experienced soldiers, you would be encouraged to steal (but of course if you got caught you either get a limb chopped off or be put to death). But the final test of becoming a man would be to kill a slave and not get caught.
When you're finally allowed into the army. Their motto was "come back with your shield or on it" Interpret it how you choose. You would fight for their ENTIRE life climbing up military ranks until, of course, you are too old to fight.
The next stage of life is when you're old. You can help control the government along side your fellow elders (It has some special name, I just can remember it xP). ONLY the elders could run this show. The young one do not have enough life experience.
There first role was to be a warrior there second was to head there family, unless they were an infant then they were tested and if they did not pass they were thrown out to die. only if they were found they would live to be a slave.
Spartan boys were sent of to military camp at age 7. They were harshly treated to make them tough. Spartan men were returned home at age 30 but were still stayed in the military until age 60. The spartan boys were taught to kill, fight, steal, not cry, and hide pain.
Life for women in Sparta were very rough. They had very few rights even though they were respected because they give birth to solders. Women in Sparta had to be tough when there husband was away at war. Women in Sparta were married very young to men older than them. They also could own land and take part in businesses .

After the Spartan boys successfully complete the "agoge" (the Spartan training for boys) they were elected to a barrack mess, where they were to eat their meals and spend the majority of their time with his messmates. this ensured that when the mess fought together as a unit in battle, the young spartan would be loyal to his mess and possess an "esprit de corp".
Spartan boys did not sleep on mats. They slept on reeds. They had very hard and uncomfortable beds with no sheets or pillows.
