The Birth of Venus (Botticelli - c.1480), like most other paintings done before the widespread introduction of oil painting in Europe during the High Renaissance (1450-1527), was made with tempera. An old technique consisting of mixing pigment with egg yokes. I've used it myself and found that one of the major problems with this technic is that it's extremely difficult to make a white paint with a yellow emulsion, and the egg whites will rot. Hence the name Dark Ages (gothic painting)... Wich, although meant as a joke, is still a valid observation: even paintings were dark.
