Federalists wanted to support England and also wanted a strong and powerful government, a national bank, and a loose interpretation of the Coast. The Democratic-Republicans wanted to support France and also wanted a small federal government, no national bank, and a strict interpretation of the Coast.
The Fedarilsts supported the constitution, and the Anti-federalists didn't. The Constitution is what divided them. The federalists supported the Constitution because they believed it would protect minority rights and create a strong central government. The anti-federalists opposed the Constitution because they supported state rights.
Federalists believed in a strong central government
Anti-Federalists feared this they were afraid states would lose to much power
Federalists promised the Anti-Federalists that a Bill of Rights would be added to the constitution. The Bill of Rights is the first 10 amendments to the constitution this helped gain the support that the Federalists needed for the Constitution to be approved.
The Anti-Federalists opposed the new U.S. Constitution for numerous reasons. They distrusted large, powerful national governments and believed liberty could only be protected in small republics in which the rulers were closely checked by the public. They believed a large nation could best be governed by a confederation, with local governments having the most control. A strong national government would be distant from the people and not capable of protecting the rights of the citizens. Congress would tax to heavily and the Supreme Court would overrule state courts. They distrusted the president having too much power, including a standing army under his control. They also favored the addition of a Bill of Rights to protect the citizens from the national government. They wanted the House of Representatives increased in size so it would reflect a greater variety of popular interests. The wanted a council created to check the actions of the president. They also favored leaving military affairs in the hands of the state militias.
The only similarities I can think of is that they both wanted what they believed to be best for the nation, and they both believed this could be achieved through a representative democracy.
The differences concern their belief in how strong the national government should be. The federalists wanted a stronger federal government (than the U.S. had under the Articles of Confederation), while the anti-federalists feared the rise of a strong national government.
